Brain Salad Surgery ...What a monumental work this was! And IS!
This is my favorite Emerson Lake & Palmer album!
Brain Salad
Surgery represents Emerson, Lake, & Palmer's finest work at
the prime of their careers. It was released in the U.S. on November
19, 1973, a year after they had
formed their label imprint, Manticore. It's release was followed
by an intense world tour.
The cover art for the album was done by H.R. Giger, who used his wife as a model.
H.R. Giger has been described as the "airbrush surrealist"
and "master of the macabre." The
record company would not allow the release of the album at first,
because the cover had a penis below the woman's chin. Giger would
not change his work, so they had to get
another artist to fix it, and it was made into a "shaft of
light."
Songs on this album:
Jerusalem was
ELP's take on a famous British hymn sung in schools and played
in the Royal Albert Hall in England. The hymn was originally based
off of a poem by William
Blake. It featured the debut of the first

G E N E S I S - THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY
A very wise progressive music fan of Gabriel era Genesis had some enlightening info on this album that I asked him to share with us all ..here is what he said .. Bobbity Bopp/
As far as I know the main influences on the Lamb were the novel Lilith by George MacDonald, published 1895. It can still be purchased. The book number is ISBN 0802860613. If you go to the Amazon.com website you can read a few reviews of the book. The book itself is written in an antiquated English that may take some getting used to but it is very interesting to see where and how Gabriel was influenced. The second influence was the poem Lamia Parts I & II by John Keats. It is an 18 page poem published in 1820. Keats was influenced by Philostratus (via Browning). And, in a very minor way, the poem "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" by William Wordsworth (written in 1804, published 1807). Most of the Gabriel-era Genesis can be seen to be influenced by Fantasy, Mythology, Science Fiction and Religion. As a brief example:
Fantasy -- White Mountain, The Musical Box, Harold the Barrel
Mythology -- Fountain of Salamacis, Cinema Show, Harlequin
Science Fiction -- Return of the Giant Hogweed (a Victorian version of Day of
the Triffids), Watcher of the Skies, Get'em Out By Friday
Religion -- Visions of Angels, Supper's Ready, The Firth of Fifth
I know there have been some people that have written long tomes about the symbolism in the band's music etc. but the band itself has never condoned or acknowledged any of it, to my knowledge. The Lamb is a culmination and combination of all the elements in one grand work as it were. All these allusions and elements aren't the thing, it was the music itself that was IT. But, all the paths that the albums would open to exploration are what made the 'Progressive' material so fascinating to myself. It wasn't just a three chord bash. Witness the little blurb in the Tales album jacket; don't know about you but I went and checked out the 'Autobiography of a Yogi' just to see what exactly influenced Jon and Steve. Anyway, that's enough of my rambling. I'll tell you what I think of your remastered Tales when I give it a spin. My knowledge is not all encompassing or definitive, just that of a very avid admirer of 'Progressive' music plus some other categories. If there's anything that I may be able to help you out with, please don't hesitate to ask. I wish you all the best in your endeavors Jim.
Sincerely,
George Massis

::: A special treat for fans of Gabriel era Genesis :::
I've enjoyed rescuing two rare recordings and enhancing them digitally to
dramatically bring the feeling of the live experience back to the listener.
I've worked many long hours with love to give new life to what were once just crappy boots.
They now shine and deliver a grand experience of these momentous tours.
::: 2 Digitally restored and enhanced rare Live soundboard recordings :::

Selling England By The Pound - Live 4/74
Includes all of this album (except 'More Fool Me' & 'After The Ordeal')
in a truly spirited performance...
+ an excellent live version of Supper's Ready.
Polished to bring the illusion of the Live show back to reality.
+

Lamb Lies Down On Broadway / Live 1975
The entire performance shined up from a dusty soundboard recording.
Captured at the start of the US tour in Early 1975.
This restoration turned out great! Designed to evoke 5th row center,
it shows the band advancing their performance skills
with this one of a kind music adventure.
Includes Peter Gabriel live narrative of the Lamb story
and his many interesting vocal effects.
E-mail for info on acquisition of these CDs :::

And...for all you wise arses out there ...I bring you The White Album!
One of my favorite songs here is Mother Natures Son.

I always wanted to get the British e.p. of this, the way the Beatles had intended it to be released. (just the songs on the top of the cover) But The corporate guys at Capitol combined the Beatles recent singles (made to be sold separately from album tracks) and mixed them 'all together now' and made a wonderful collection that actually seemed to work as a whole. This is what was expected after Sgt. Pepper in the American audience no doubt. It was a great follow up to Pepper.

This is (to me) the first truly HiFi modern production. George Martin and his chosen engineers were at their peak with this one. It was also one of the first recordings made on solid state equipment ..a very fat sounding recording. but who cares? The music was awesome ... The vocals on 'Because' are stunning and beautiful! From top to bottom a fantastic last Ya Ya! The 'Come Together' 45rpm played at 16rpm was also an exceptional treat to my 6 year old ears. WOW!

...And you can fly
High as a kite if you want to Faster than light if you want to
Speeding through the universe Thinking is the best way to travel
It's all a dream
Light passing by on the screen And there's you and I on the beam
Speeding through the universe Thinking is the best way to travel
We ride the waves
Distance is gone, will we find out? How life began, will we find out?
In Search Of The Lost Chord ...My second Moody Blues album ever. My Brother and I used to get a weekly allowance for keeping the house and our rooms clean and it was just enough for me to buy an album each week, about $3.25 in 1970. When I discovered the Moody Blues I spent each week anticipating the next week for that ultimate treat of a new Moody Blues album! The house was clean for about 5 weeks! I still love these albums more than anything else because of how they reached my very young and malleable mind with the human truths they contain and still inspire in me. These guys were philosophers of great importance indeed!

i think ...therefore I am ...I think
of course you are ...my bright little star (bonk)!
This was the First Moody Blues album I ever experienced and it made me think. That strange sound that opens the album still mystifies me ..What is it??? I want to call the producer Tony Clark and ask him ...my theory is that it is very slowed down tape with the actual bias signal becoming audible mixed with some mellotron sounds and all heavily reverberated. 'Are You Sitting Comfortably' into 'Have You Heard' still sends me on a great journey. 'Sitting' (words below) seems to be the inspiration to the album cover by Phil Travers. I was so amazed when I started 3Ding this one. Wow! It came to life so beautifully in such stunning new depth and detail. In all the years I've looked at it, I never noticed the upside down skull where the tree root emerges. The 3D of this one makes it all float in space and amplified the cosmic overtones that was hidden there in 2d. My current fave 3D/CD for sure!

SUPERTRAMP CRISIS? WHAT CRISIS? A great album of human Conscience and social awareness or longing for it. 'And if my thoughts had wings...' What a cool way to start a record! Some heavy topics covered with great feeling for personal truth. I can still feel like some of the lyrics were written just about me and what I've been thinking!

Listen ... should we fight forever? knowing as we do know ..fear destroys
Listen... should we leave our children? ..listen ...our lives stare in silence ..help us now...
I got this awesome Yes album for Christmas 1974 after being bowled over by Tales From Topographic Oceans the year before. I couldn't imagine what they would do to follow that up. But the scope of the album was INTENSE and had some very cool cosmic moments and frightening but insightful lyrics. The ending of Gates of Delirium (aka Soon) was a emotional release of immaculate feeling in contrast to the sonic war that precedes it. Sound Chaser is very powerful and I used to turn fans of Kiss away from their heroes with it! It's a great eclectic progressive album and Patrick Moraz Kicks booty on it too! It was such a strange coincidence that he went on to join the Moody Blues ...I never would have predicted that one in a million years!
A personal archive of
correspondence and memorabilia...

This is my second album- Build Your Own Planet. I am extremely proud of the sonic immensity of this record and its ability to sweep through the universe and caress the listener. There are moments when I feel totally immersed in the cosmic wonderlands this CD evokes. I custom made most all the sounds in the songs. The Song 'The Talking Future Forest' is kind of of a mini Close to the Edge. I think it sounds big and beautiful! Notice in the above image in the lower left- a tiny Percival Lowell seated at his telescope. He was one of the first to look out at another world and 'Build His Own Planet' ...thinking that he saw the indisputable evidence of canals and sure signs of crafty beings on the surface of Mars.
