YES - Tales From Topographic Oceans A free living artistic work! This 2-record set with its four epic songs, made an everlasting impression on me when I was just an unfettered nine year old kid with no instilled mental conceptions to climb over. I had not yet been conditioned into the POP song rule book. The music touched my spirit with its insight and visual majesty. It's one of the few albums, if not the only one, that reveals a Universal language woven within a music that seems to communicate directly to the logic of spirit. This is creativity in its authentic form. I've been inspired to make that a part of my life's music and work as well.

One of the highlites of this album to mention here is Chris Squire's conviction and vibe on every note he plays: It was mostly lost on old released versions that had a very feeble amount of bass frequency. ( Happy to report that the definitive version is now available with the Electra/Rhino remaster) This is his most stirring works and I find myself sometimes just paying attention to the masterful and inventive bass lines he has assembled on this record.

The visuals & vibes of this YES music and the fantastic art of Roger Dean came together in a magical way to capture something very elusive and hard to define. It was perhaps one of the few times such epic work was achieved without the intervening of record company executives trying to steer their boys toward a money making hit. It stands as a rare authentic expression of young artists in search of life's meanings and harnessing so completely the power of music's ability to communicate intricate inner concepts. My eternal gratitude to Jon Anderson for having the strength and uncorrupted vision as an artist to bring these fine works to light and for ignoring those who would have him write little POP songs.

...ohh really?

Believe it or not- YES wrote letters and sent me cards and notes in the 70's.

I dug 'em out of the closet and scanned them to share with those

After he had journeyed,

And his feet were sore, And he was tired,

He came upon an orange grove And he rested ...And he lay in the cool,

And while he rested, he took to himself an orange and tasted it, And it was good.

And he felt the earth to his spine, And he asked, and he saw the tree above him,

and the stars And the veins in the leaf,

And the light, and the balance. And he saw magnificent perfection,

Whereon he thought of himself in balance, And he knew he was.

And he thought of those he angered, For he was not a violent man,

And he thought of those he hurt For he was not a cruel man

And he thought of those he frightened For he was not an evil man,

And he understood. He understood himself.

Upon this he saw that when he was of anger or knew hurt or felt fear,

It was because he was not understanding, And he learned, compassion.

And with his eye of compassion. He saw his enemies like unto himself,

And he learned love. Then, he was answered.

Just open your eyes, And realize, the way it's always been.

Just open your mind And you will find

The way it's always been. Just open your heart

And that's a start.

First generation Moody Blues '68-'72 Is still some of my favorite music to listen to. They were the next true 'Recording Artists' after the Beatles. They took the studio and all sorts of wild instruments and made Grand Statements about all that is truly important to life on this planet. Most people have heard the 'Radio' Moody Blues and their 'Pop Songs', They're ok, but the -real- treasure is to be found in the art of the Album Tracks, alive with innovative spirit and emotion. The songs are laid out to blend into each other on all of their first seven releases. It has a dramatic and evocative effect! The general rules of pop records did not apply! They would have very short or long songs and use part-1 and part-2 revisited ideas. The cosmic universe was also very alive and very communicative on those records. I am still totally entertained by a listen to a whole Moody Blues album and at this moment would choose 'To Our Childrens Childrens Children' as a fantastic highlight and one of my favorites.

...................

the time of this albums release in 1976, I had been a YES fan for several years and was enjoying a growing correspondence with the band. I had written a fan letter when I was around ten and sent it c/o Atlantic Records with instructions to please forward it on to Yes. (what a cute kid!) ...Many months later, I was blown away to receive a YES press kit from England. The bands personal secretary sent bio's and a photo with a letter explaining that they had no official fan club but I could write the band at the enclosed address. I don't imagine that the band had a lot of ten year old fans but I had just graduated from the Beatles and Moody Blues and YES was totally freakin' me out with Close to the Edge, Topographic Oceans and Relayer. This package was a total rush for me as a kid and I most certainly did write back many times.
It was in about '75-'76 that the group released solo albums to kind of relax a bit from the Yes thing. I had sent the band my accolades for their albums and was totally blown away when I received a hand-written letter From Steve Howe telling me about his Beginnings album and thanking me for my words. Wow...how very cool! Of all the solo albums though,
Jon Anderson's Olias Of Sunhillow had really made an impact on me. It sounded so completely unique and had a cosmic little story that ran with the music in unison. I didn't realize until just recently when I found an imported CD of Jon's album how much of an influence that record had on my own music. It's a great inspiration because it is an honest heartfelt music without the coercion to be a "Hit" as so many artists are pushed into by their record companies.
The band was beginning a tour of the states and Jon had sent me a personal card with graphics from his solo album. These guys had class! That they would take the time to communicate with a young fan was fantastic!
After hearing the CD again after all these years, I found the album to still be absolutely stunning. The sound quality is suburb as is every performance. Beyond all this is a lot of hard to define magic in the song and sound, and that is what I try to and hopefully capture in the music that I make. It's spirits communicating beyond words. The power of music is immense, and I hope there comes a day when everyone can find and feel such powerful an inspiration that brings them to better things.

I've often wondered what it was that allowed bands in the early seventies to make such incredible records. As a recording engineer, this album stands as one of the best 'sounding' records of the era. Everything about it is larger than life. It's an eventful moment when great player/songwriters meet with great recording engineer/producers and create this kind of magic. The engineer, Ken Scott, started his career on the Beatles White Album and by the time he worked with Supertramp five years later, he was a true master of audio. This was the first album that I really noticed true dimensional stereo and how it could be very 3D and draw you in. A great moment for me indeed. I love the song 'If Everyone Were Listening' and 'Rudy'

This is peter's 3rd album and it's great ( it made the best 3D picture here ), He is the intruder! but one of my all time favorite albums is Gabriel's 5th album
'SO' I love all the music and twisted views along with some of the most beautiful human insight. Another reason this record is a fave is that it is up with the best sounding records of all time, realized by engineer/producer Daniel Lanois. The sound of the album is so conducive to the visual strength of the music. Tony Levin also plays some of the most original bass lines and sounds ever recorded. The final Mixing of a record is such a fine art which requires an extreme amount of attention to the detail of the performances on the multi-track tape. Knowing how elusive this can be, I appreciate the effort that peter and Daniel went through to achieve such a stunning array of focused vibes. Gabriel's 4th album 'Security' is also a fave of mine with worlds of music brought out as only Peter can do. It was such a complete rush for me when I was signed to a recording contract by Larry Fast who was the keyboadist with Gabriel's band and on those albums. I was so enraptured by the Security album at that time and was blown away to get a phone call from Larry who played some very cool things on the album. I kept asking him all these questions about how they recorded it. Larry was very gracious with replies and that gave the album even more intensity for me! Peter Gabriel is a hero to me in that he has stayed true to his heart and spirit as an artist and rarely ever sold out for money. He is also a very original thinker and does curious stuff with his talents that I am very entertained with. Keep it coming peter!
